Geoscience Australia Talk

On the 18th Feb, H&SC gave a presentation to Geoscience Australia (GA) and other interested government parties at the GA offices in Canberra. The purpose of the talk was to go through the components of Resource Estimation explaining concepts and technical terms, bearing in mind the relationship with Table 1 of the JORC Checklist.

Methodologies were described and the talk was essentially a walk through of a resource estimation exercise following industry standard procedures. Anecdotal evidence of when things have gone wrong were also discussed including QAQC failure and suspect mineral domaining. Recognition of red flags in resource estimation was also touched on in order to provide assistance when government personnel are reviewing resource estimation reports.

Similar presentations can be organised and tailored to the specific needs of the audience.

Middle Eastern Rare Earths

Phillip Hellman was recently invited by a government agency of a middle eastern country to evaluate its rare earth element and rare metal deposits. The invitation came as a result of Phillip’s extensive experience with rare earth elements that includes resource studies on some of the world’s richest deposits. The assignment is directed at establishing a processing hub designed to help diversification away from an oil and gas based economy.

Exploring in NSW?

A new government initiative in NSW has been launched to provide exploration companies with grants to fast track their drilling programs, the New Frontiers Cooperative Drilling program. The NSW Government will oversee the investment of up to $2 million in drilling, from the New Frontiers program to encourage exploration, which will support the long-term sustainability of the State’s resources sector.

The NSW government is calling for submissions for drilling programs which demonstrate advanced prospectivity, sound financial planning and a proven technical base.

The New Frontiers Cooperative Drilling program will fund up to 50% of direct drilling costs for individual projects, with a cap of $200,000, within a total government allocation of $2 million in the 2013-14 financial year.

JORC Code 2012

The Australasian Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (‘the JORC Code’) is a professional code of practice that sets minimum standards for Public Reporting of minerals Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves.

The JORC Code provides a mandatory system for the classification of minerals Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves according to the levels of confidence in geological knowledge and technical and economic considerations in Public Reports.

There are two Editions of the JORC Code which are current, as a transition is underway from the 2004 Edition to the 2012 Edition of the Code. The transition arrangements for the JORC Code are:

  • The JORC Code 2012 Edition and the new ASX Listing Rules relating to the disclosure of reserves and resources by ASX-listed mining and oil & gas exploration and production companies will come into effect on 1 December 2013 (with the exception of the requirement for a Pre-Feasibility Study or a Feasibility Study to be completed in order to declare an Ore Reserve, which will come into effect on 1 December 2014).
  • During the transition period until 30 November 2013, the minimum requirement for Public Reports is compliance with the JORC Code 2004 Edition and the current ASX Listing Rules. From 1 December 2013 all Public Reports must comply with the JORC Code 2012 Edition and the new ASX Listing Rules (with the exception of the above-mentioned Pre-Feasibility Study and Feasibility Study requirements which must be complied with from 1 December 2014).
